THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE OF CONSTANTINOPLE AND THE UNREDEEMED HELLENISM DURING THE KEMAL PERIOD, 1919-1923

Abstract

The present research examines the actions and the greater role of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the unredeemed Hellenism, mainly during Kemal Ataturk’s period (1919– 1923). It specifically examines the role of the Patriarchate concerning the Hellenism of the inner regions of Asia Minor (Pontos, Bithyny et al), which are under the influence and power of Kemal Ataturk, since all other regions in Turkey were controlled by allies.

Well, the research showed that the Patriarchate deployed, in that period, dareful activities in order to protect the Hellenism, which suffered untold hardships by the brigandish gangs of Kemal through:

  1. resolutions, protests, representations, newsletters, circulars, actions to allies (ambassadors and High Commissioners of the Great Powers in Constantinople) and the Comity of Nations, but also to other Christian Churches and to the international public opinion,
  2. accusing and denouncing the atrocities in the region, mainly in Pontos,
  3. persistent and insistent appeals to anyone who could help and side the banished and the
