ВЕЛИКИ РАСКОЛ: РИМ И ВИЗАНТИЈА
Abstract
Сукоб између Византије и Рима у основи je био политички2 сукоб. Овде термин „политички“ употребљавамо у његовом оригиналном и литерарном значењу, изведеном из речи πολιτεία - „политичко тело”3. Заиста, основно питање у спору било је управо структура и администрација хришћанског друштва, хришћанске πολιτεία-е. Због недељивог јединства хришћанског комонвелта [Christian Commonwealth], установљеног под Константином и Теодосијем, и обновљеног под Јустинијаном, то је такође био и канонски сукоб.
Уопштено говорећи, напетост између Византије и Рима била је напетост између царства и папства, пре него непосредно између дотичних цркава. У великој мери била је истог карактера и природе као борба између папства и царства на Западу. Стварни проблем био је једнак у оба примера. Која је законска улога „кнеже⧓ и ,,царе⧓ у уређивању хришћанског друштва? Сама реч imperium првенствено је означена не као институција или територија, већ једноставно као функције и права владалаца. На исти начин, реч βασιλεία наставила је да значи „царевање“ [kingship], пре него „царство“ [kingdom]. Ипак, Римско царство је и даље постојало. У западном царству, као политичкој сили, није било праве стабилности, иако је идеја царства била снажан фактор у средњовековном животу. ,,У пракси, прича о царству, касније о светом Римском царству, била је прича о дисконтинуитету. Истовремено је значила различите ствари различитим људима, и другачије ствари људима у различитим временима; заиста, била је различите ствари кроз разна времена”4. Међутим, у источном царству она je била постојана стварност, опипљива и тешка. Њено постојање било je изазов папској концепцији хришћанског поретка. Пресудна тачка je била она о ауторитету и јурисдикцији, који су били и верска и „политичка” питања, с обзиром да између њих није било могуће направити прецизну разлику у оквиру недељиве структуре хришћанског комонвелта.
