THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH AND THE SO-CALLED EXTERNAL DIALOGUE ABOUT KOSOVO AND METOHIJA IN THE PERIOD 2011-2018
Abstract
In the period from 2008 until 2018, with the mediation of the European Union, several agreements were concluded in relation to Kosovo and Metohija. The issue of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo and Metohija is one of the most complex and the most important questions for the Serbian people, since it tackles the only Serbian institution which has been continuously, throughout our entire history,present in the mentioned region. Not only has this issue not been treated with adequate attention, but it is obvious that the Serbian Orthodox Church is not involved in the so-called external and in the so-called internal dialogue about Kosovo and Metohija. In the recent phases of the so-called external dialogue between Belgrade and Priština, a tendency may be perceived to reduce the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo and Metohija to a certain number of religious facilities that have a certain cultural value. This concerns the proposal which was in the year of 2007 treated in the Annex V to the so-called Ahtisaari Plan which, inter alia, stipulatestheprotection zones for fifty-nine (59) Orthodox religious facilities. The Albanians from Priština implemented this approach in their own manner through some legal acts that are not observed in most of cases. In the recent period, unilateral attitude of the state authorities in Serbia may be perceived to request protection solely for the movable and immovable property of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Kosovo and Metohija. Considering the above mentioned, the intention of the so-called external dialogue about Kosovo and Metohija is to establish the status of one of the national minorities for the Orthodox Serbs with their clergy and monasticism, such as the status of the Serbs in Szentendrein Hungary or in Timisoara in Romania (while it should be borne in mind that these are the actual states, as opposed to the so-called Republic of Kosovo, as a creation which is not and will never be regarded as a state by the Serbian Orthodox Church).
