ERRITORIAL MOBILITY AS A CHALLENGE OF SERBIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY: CASE STUDY OF MONASTERY SAINT PROHOR PČINJSKI
Abstract
This paper investigates different forms of territorial mobility, as a result of secular and sacred activity of Serbian Orthodox Church, affecting national identity of Serbian people. Multidisciplinary research was based on the case study of the area of outstanding qualities Dolina Pčinje, at whose centre orthodox monastery Saint Prohor pčinjski is located, as the spiritual, cultural and economic centre of Pčinjski county in the farthest South East corner of Serbia. The qualitative field research was conducted throughout July 2017, using the methods of observation, participation and recording, as well as interviews with the igumania, mother Stefanida, its employees and visitors to this protected area. The results of interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical research demonstrated that four big waves of migrations of Serbian people, caused by wars on the area of Yugoslavia in the course of last four centuries, provided useful answer to the challenges the people were faced with. Despite of it, the people kept a part of its territory, where after a century (2006) recreated its independent, particular and sovereign multi-ethnic, multiconfessional and multicultural state. More importantly, it preserved consciousness of national identity and common knowledge, passed on by the institutional cultural memory of Serbian Orthodox Church as the oldest religious and cultural institution of Serbian people. The case study of St Prohor pčinjski monastery shows that the Church is still capable not just of preserving, but also creating new secular and sacred values, representing religious and cultural identity of Serbian people. This is exactly the role of devotional journeys - known as a pilgrimage (journey devoted to the God), and other visits to Orthodox monasteries – to peacefully preserve heritage, as well as create new historical memories, as the necessary spiritual basis of culture and economy. This trait of territorial mobility in peace at the same attracts international visitors, thus creating additional cultural and economic values, without being a threat to the basic religious value of the Orthodox church and spiritual life of the Monastery.
