PROF. DR. DJOKO SLIJEPČEVIĆ IN SWITZERLAND 1948–1954
Abstract
After having emigrated from Serbia in 1944, Prof. Dr. Djoko Slijepčević had been in the displaced persons camps in Italy and Germany from 1945-1948. During that time he tried to organize his departure to some other country in which he would be able to continue his academic work and gather his family. After being released from the displaced persons camps, he arrived to Switzerland. There he devoted himself to studying Old Catholic Theology and History of Protestant Church at the Faculty of Old Catholic Theology within the University of Bern. At this Faculty he spent 12 semesters, from 1948-1954. After a break of several years, he returned to publishing reviews and articles in Serbian, which he sent to church magazines and to the magazine „Iskra“. Once he mastered the German language he started publishing scientific papers and reviews in German. He kept his contacts with other emigrants, and deepened his acquaintance with Prof. Dr. Lazo Kostić, a very fruitful emigrant intellectual. Slijepčević never forgot the benefactions of the Bishop of Bern Dr. Adolf Küry who engaged himself in releasing from the displaced persons camps and further destiny of many Serbian students and members of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Slijepčević himself being one of them. After the death of Bishop Dr. Küry in 1956, Slijepčević published a lengthy necrology in “Iskra” which included a lot of details about this Bishop. The end of this paper contains the results of the research of the emigrant life and work of Prof. Slijepčević. His efforts in the academic field have been highlighted, and his attendance of numerous ecclesiastic and academic seminars and conferences in Germany, Austria and Switzerland mentioned. The appendix of the paper contains the list of bibliographical units of Prof. Dr. Djoko Slijepčević from 1948-1954.
