THE APOCALYPTIC NATURE OF JEREMIAH'S NEW TESTAMENT IN HEBR. 8,8-12

Abstract

The prophecy about the making of the New Covenant (Jer. 31,31–34) is cited in Heb. 8,8–12 as scriptural proof of the writer’s thesis about the superiority of the Christ’s Priesthood over the service of the Jewish High Priest. This thesis is developed in comparison between the First and the New Covenant. The superiority of the Christ’s New Covenant is established in Heb. 8,1–6 by means of the static space contrast (τὰἐπουράνια – τὰ ἐπίγεια), as the service of Christ in the heavenly Tent. In the scriptural proof of this thesis (Heb. 8,8–12), the prophecy of Jeremiah about the future New Covenant is transformed, by means of liberty in dealing with the text of Septuagint, in a highly apocalyptic text. In this way, by using the dynamic time scheme of the biblical apocalyptic, the writer of Hebrews points not only to the New Covenant in Christ’s blood as qualitatively higher than the Old one, but also to the time succession of the Two Covenants. By establishing the New Covenant the Old one is rendered out of usage, obsolete and non- existent.
