LE STATUT DU CONCILE DU LATRAN (649) SELON SAINT MAXIME LE CONFESSEUR
Abstract
Une controverse s’est récemment développée en Russie sur le statut du concile de Latran (649) tel que le concevait saint Maxime. Le P. Valentin Asmous a déclaré que le fait que saint Maxime traite le concile du Latran comme un concile oecuménique constitue une révolution dans le domaine de l’ecclésiologie, car cela signifie qu’il reconnaît la possibilité qu’un concile oecuménique puisse être convoqué indépendamment d’un décret impérial. Gregory Benevitch reproche au P. V. Asmous de reprendre l’affirmation que le concile du Latran était selon saint Maxime un concile oecuménique à un article du P. J.-M. Garrigues (théologien catholique). G. Benevitch note que si le P. V. Asmous et le P. Garrigues avaient raison, cela signifierait que saint Maxime a été le premier parmi les grands Pères de l’Église à autoriser la tenue de conciles oecuméniques sans édit de l’empereur et sans la participation des quatre autres patriarches orientaux.
Danc cet article J.-C Larchet tente d’apporter, en se référant aux textes de saint Maxime et au contexte ecclésiologique de l’époque, une solution au problème posé. Sa conclusion est que que saint Maxime ne considère le concile du Latran ni comme un concile proprement local ni comme un concile proprement oecuménique, mais comme un concile ayant, à son époque et dans les circonstances où il est placé, la valeur et l’autorité d’un concile oecuménique.
