THE CHARACTER OF ST. SAVA IN TWO COMEDIES FROM LATE 19TH CENTURY DUBROVNIK

Abstract

In search of the character and personality of the greatest Serbian Orthodox saint in the cultural history of Dubrovnik, 19th century has been somewhat neglected.

While in the earlier times St. Sava was mainly mentioned in the Serbian lands, in this period, his character is found in the literature and, more broadly, the cultural heritage of Dubrovnik itself, part of the rooted awareness on his importance for the spiritual and religious life of both Orthodox and Catholic worlds.

In two comedies preserved only as manuscripts, decisively helped by God, along with St. Vlachos, St. Sava is the true defender of the new age, and his critics are embodied in the representative of the papal Rome - St. Peter.
