CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MUSIC LANGUAGE IN THE CHERUBIC HYMN OF STEVAN STOJANOVIC MOKRANJAC
Abstract
The paper points to the historical significance of Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac in preserving the church folk melody and its artistic adaptation. Cherubic hymn is used as an example to examine the specificity of the musical language of the composer. It undoubtedly belongs to the masterpieces of Serbian spiritual music and some features that define Mokranjac as a composer can be seen. In addition to oscillating between parallel tonalities, the use of secondary stages and plagal connection, the paper also points to the use of chromatics, both in the melody line and in altered chords.
