ORTHODOX CLERGY IN TREBINJE IN 14TH AND 15TH CENTURY
Abstract
On the basis of published and unpublished Dubrovnik sources, as well as epitaphs written on the Medieval monuments – steles, this paper focuses on the Orthodox clergy in Trebinje in 14th and 15th century. The majority of paper looks at a clerical family from the Police settlement in Trebinje, whose members lived in Konavle and preached Orthodox faith as well. The first known parson from the aforementioned family was Tvrden Bogdanovic who had been mentioned in sources since 1330s until the second half of 1470s. He held Orthodox church service in the St. Stephen Church in Trebinje, which was pulled down in its long history, so that it is not known even today where exactly it was located. The family tradition was maintained by Tvrden’s nephew Bogcin Stanisalic who was mentioned in the sources by late 1430s. His sons were Pribat Radoslav, Cicoje and Smoljan, and their surname was Popovic. Bogcin’s son, Smoljan was also an Orthodox priest, who was mentioned in the sources from the second half of 1430s until the period of the Osmanli occupation of Trebinje, or, more precisely, the early 1480s. Apart from the abovementioned parsons, the paper examines other parsons from Trebinje, as well as monks and nuns in 15th century.
