Abstract

At historical Pontos, during the last period (19th and early 20th century), the transit trade can be considered as a particularly important extrinsic factor in the shaping of the new architectural morphology, especially concerning the urban regions. The pluralism of architectural expression, particularly after the second half of the 19th century, but not as a distant reverberation of the industrial revolution in Europe, in combination with the economic and social conditions of the era and the latest technological advances, created – especially at the urban regions of Pontos – new morphological models and directions. Complex architectural impacts with elements from the French classicism, neo- baroque expressions and neo-renaissance morphological models, contributed to the creation of a powerful wave of local eclecticism, with intense neoclassical and neo- romantic attributes. However, the national and racial diversity of that historic period – i.e. until the first quarter of the 20th century – does not allow that easily the distinguishing of a certain architectural identity of that very region.
