Abstract

The most important characteristic of icons is that they are not images of every human, but they are images of God, angels and the saints, who gain the likeness of God and who also by obtaining freedom and blessedness with God, can intercede on our behalf. Icons do not represent the world as it is present around us or even improved by artistic vision, but they rather give us a glimpse of the new transformed world of the Kingdom of God, which is already experienced by saints and testified by the Fathers of the Church. Therefore, the icons are not a matter of artistic imagination, but they are  evidences of the true experience of God by holy men and women. The aim of this article is to offer an introduction to the theology of icons, by explaining the basic notions of the theology that emerged during the iconoclast controversy.
