Abstract

Abstract: The article analyses changes in the definition of the content of such notions as “tolerance” and “intolerance” in the Roman Empire in connection with dissemination of Christianity and especially after the Edict of Milan in the context of the religious policy of the emperor Constantine. The Altar of Victory controversy has become a peculiar result of the development of the Christians ’ and pagans ’ views on the religious tolerance and intolerance. This controversy preceded the official prohibition of paganism.
